This lemon ice recipe - or as the Italians refer to it, granita di limone, is a popular frozen treat in Italy.
This refreshing treat, known as Italian Ice here in the US, but of course it isn't called that by Italians.
Granita di limone easy to make at home, too.
Along with lemon, coffee is one of the most widely seen flavors.
I'm providing recipes for both versions here, so choose your favorite or try both!
Process for both versions:
Heat the water and sugar together in a small saucepan over low heat until the sugar dissolves. Bring the liquid to a boil. Remove from heat and let cool.
Combine lemon juice and zest (or coffee) with the sugar syrup. Poor into a shallow container (like a pie dish) and freeze until solid.
To loosen, place the bottom of the container in a pool of shallow hot water for a few seconds. Turn it upside down onto a cutting board and chop into large pieces.
Place the pieces into a food processor or blender (I love my KitchenAid Food Processor with Mini Bowl) and mix until chopped into small chunks.
Spoon into serving glasses or pour back into a container and freeze until it is time to be served. Allow to thaw slightly before serving.
Top the coffee granita with whipped cream, and garnish the lemon granita with a strip of lemon peel.
Serve in pretty dessert bowls or wine glasses for an elegant touch, or just go with colorful throw away cups for the kids or for an outdoor event.
